The awards bring $2000 and an engraved crystal trophy. The recipients of the 2004 awards presentations to be held June 10 at the Equity offices are: Anika Noni Rose of Caroline, or Change John Tartaglia of Avenue Q. Lucille Lortel Awards The annual Lucille Lortel Awards were created by The League of Off-Broadway Theatres and Producers in 1986 to recognize Lucille Lortel’s tireless devotion to Off-Broadway. The 2004 awards include a new category, Outstanding Solo Show and will be presented Monday, 5/03/04 at Minetta Lane Theatre followed by a Celebration at Eugene. Special awards will be presented to Kathleen Chalfant, The Public Theater, and Noche Flamenca to Receive Special Awards. The way they work: 30 nominators see every Broadway shows and then 700 voters see and vote on every show they nominated (no write-incandidates allowed-- which is true of awards as well). The 58th Annual Tony Awards will be presented Sunday, June 6 at Radio City Music Hall with Hugh Jackman returning as host. The 70th Annual Drama League Awards for Distinguished Production of a Play, a Musical, Revival of a Play, and Revival of a Musical will be awarded at a luncheon ceremony to be held on Friday, May 14 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel. Nominees for these awards, announced on April 21, are as follows. The Drama League will also bestow the following special awards: The Distinguished Achievement in Musical Theatre Award will be given to Donna Murphy, The Julia Hansen Award for Excellence in Directing will go to George C. Wolfe, and the Unique Contribution to the Theatre Award will be given to City Center Encores! Note asterisks * before the winners. Distinguished Performance of the Year was awarded to Hugh Jackman, The Boy from Oz Distinguished Production of a Play Addicted Bridge and Tunnel Frozen *I Am My Own Wife Intimate Apparel The Retreat From Moscow Distinguished Production of a Musical Bombay Dreams Caroline, or Change Johnny Guitar Never Gonna Dance Taboo *Wicked Distinguished Production of a Revival - Play A Raisin in the Sun Beckett/Albee Cat on a Hot Tin Roof *Henry IV Jumpers The Normal Heart Distinguished Production of a Revival – Musical *Assassins Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Fiddler on the Roof Finian’s Rainbow Little Shop of Horrors Wonderful Town Special Notes: Avenue Q and Golda’s Balcony, both of which transferred to Broadway this season, were originally honored last year by The Drama League for their Off-Broadway incarnations (in the categories of Distinguished Production of a Musical and Play, respectively). Both productions are therefore ineligible for awards consideration this season. The Broadway production of Prymate and the Off-Broadway musical Bare will be considered for next season's awards, as the nominating committee was not able to see these shows prior to the eligibility cut-off date. Top of List NY Drama Critics Circle Awards The Critics Circle comprises drama critics from daily newspapers, magazines and wire services based in the metropolitan area. After the Pulitzer Prize for drama, it's the nation's second-oldest theater award. Intimate Apparel was named the Best Play of 2004 by The New York Drama Critics Circle, which voted not to award a Best Musical honor this year and also voted against bestowing a Best Foreign Play prize. Aside from the Best Play award, the NYDCC decided to present a special award to Barbara Cook for her contributions to the musical theatre. (St. Jean's Players) Top of List Otto Rene Castillo Awards for Political Theatre The "Otto", named after the Guatemalan poet and revolutionary, Otto Rene Castillo, is the only honor in the United States recognizing the achievement of individuals and theatre companies who conceive, produce and foster the development of innovative and socially challenging (political) theatre. The award is an original sculpture created by the noted Brazilian-born contemporary artist and stage designer, Sheila Goloborotko. Fred Newman, artistic director of the Castillo Theater is the presenter-- the date and place for the 2004 presentations: June 7th, the All Stars Project's performing arts center.
