The company will soon have a 30,000 square-foot permanent home in Brooklyn, NY, its affable and versatile founder's extensive work in opera continues to bring opera enthusiasts to dance performances and dance enthusiasts to opera. Fans are flocking to Becket to catch the Group's current program . Given the proximity to the Tanglewood Music Festival, it is apt that this is as much a marvelous live concert as a fine smorgasbord of work choreographed by Morris between 1982 and 1994 . Bach, Hoffman, Dvorák and Lou Harrison are among the composers represented and played by a fine group of musicians.
Shades of a Hitchcock or Woody Allen movie, Morris himself makes an appearance in the very theatrical The Office. But even when the affable dancer-choreographer is not on stage, his presence is clearly evident in the movements and gestures of his dancers who often come in atypical shapes and sizes.
All five pieces being presented showcase such Morris hallmarks as working jokes into the choreography and beautifully marrying darkness and light. The jokeyness is most evident in the opening Canonic 3/4 Studies. The Office is story in dance with six people anxiously awaiting the intermittent call of a stern-faced secretary. They relieve their anxiety in a series of slavic dances.
Readers who saw the previous program, Seven Deadly Sins will find Lucky Charms,the piece illustrated in the above photo, a continuation of the crossover between dance and musical theater. The ensemble, in bright sequins, has all the glitter and glamour of a Broadway musical show stopper.
All performances are currently sold out, but it pays to check for last-minute ticket availability. You might also want to check out : Ann Carlson's Night Light which is running concurrently in the Doris Duke Studio Theatre.
