Last Train to Nibroc stops at the Miniature Theatre of Chester
When I reviewed Last Train to Nibroc during its Off-Broadway run in New York I was hooked by its hokey charm. As a two-hander with minimal scenic requirements, it struck me as a particularly strong candidate to join other small shows that travel well to regional theaters. As a part-time Berkshire resident, watching the play on forty-second Street kept popping images of Norman Rockwell posters into my mind -- especially since Garfield, a budding writer and one of the play's two characters, sells an article to the magazine that made Rockwell famous. I thought the Rockwell Museum might make an unusual site-specific setting for a future production.
Well Arlene Hutton's Train has made a stop in the area. Not at the Museum, however, but at another venue that gives it a site-specific flavor: The Miniature Theatre located in the Chester Town Hall.
Since my schedule precludes my covering this revival, I refer readers to the original review: Last Train to Nibroc. As the playwright is an actress, so is co-director Michael Connors. In fact, Miniature Theatre fans sill probably remember him from his appearance inn the theater's presentation of The Double Bass. Connors' directing colleague is Seth Barrish, co-founder and artistic director of The Barrow Group which initially nurtured Last Train to Nibroc. As you will see from the production notes below, this charming two-hander runs only through August 4th. -- Elyse Sommer
