Mini Review From CurtainUp's Annotated Address Book
Matty, An evening with Christy Mathieson

MATTY. In recent years a number of little known performers have successfully created one-person memory plays to showcase their talents (i.e. Bronx Tales and Family Business). Here Eddie Frierson, takes his turn at this genre through the story of the dominant pitcher during the first two decades of the 1900's and one of the first five players elected to the Hall of Fame in 1936. Frierson is a versatile actor with enormous physical grace. Maybe you don't have to be a baseball buff to really enjoy this but if the questions and answers Frierson fielded at the end of the performance we attended were strictly about the great American pasttime and not the play per se--possibly because it sorely lacks incisive language or wit and leans too heavily on repetitive platitudes. Lamb's Downstairs Stage, 130 W. 44th St. (239-6200). Closed December 1, 1996.
