Estelle Gilson is a New York writer and translator, whose fiction, articles
and profiles have appeared in many publications. Her translation from
Italian of The Stories and Recollection of Umberto Saba (Sheep Meadow
Press) received two awards in manuscript as well as the MLA's 1994
Scaglione award as the best literary translation published in the previous
two years. She has also translated from Hebrew, To Be Recorded, by Gabriel
Preil, and French, The Jew, by Stendhal Recently she completed work on two
novels by the late Italian magic realist, Massimo Bontempelli, supported in
part by NEA and NYSCA translation grants. She tries very hard to be a
traduttrice, and never a traditrice.
